Nurturing new hair growth after cancer

Your breast cancer is finally gone, but due to chemotherapy, so is your hair.


Fortunately, steps can be taken to help the hair recovery process before and after cancer treatments begin, said Pam Garcia, who owns Self Salon in Pensacola with her husband, Carlos.

Hair loss usually begins three to four weeks after the first dose of chemo and usually stops after six to eight weeks. Knowing that hair loss can occur, it’s smart to plan a hair growth treatment system before chemo treatments begin, she said.

Pam, who is also a hair stylist, suggests starting a hair growth treatment plan and taking Biotin before chemo treatments start. Biotin is a water soluble B7 vitamin that is useful in stimulating hair growth. Of course, always consult with your doctor first, she added.

Two growth treatments to consider are Nioxin or Chi Hair Growth Treatment, both of which can be purchased at professional salons. Pam advises using the hair growth treatment a minimum of three times a week.
